Has Anyone Been Successful Getting Opzelura?

A MyVitiligoTeam Member asked a question 💭

When I saw that Opzelura had received FDA approval for vitiligo, I scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist. The dermatologist seemed pessimistic that it would be approved by my insurance, so she discussed what I understood to be a compounding pharmacy that specialized in dermatology. I received a denial letter from the insurance company and contacted this specialized pharmacy. They said they had received a denial for Opzelura and there was no option to pay cash for this cream. Tofacitinib is sold as a tablet to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Tofacitinib as a cream to treat vitiligo does not have FDA approval so it must be provided by a compounding pharmacy.

I have been using Opzelura since July of 2022 with good results on my hands and arms. I also have a few spots around my neck and has worked well. Through work I used to have United Healthcare and now this year switched to Aetna and both have covered Opzelura with no issues and my co-pay was $60 dlls. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I'm also looking into a company called IncyteCARES. Their website says, "If you have been denied coverage by your commercial prescription insurance, IncyteCARES for OPZELURA may be able to help." Has anyone tried this? See https://www.incytecares.com/dermatology/opzelur...

When I was initially turned down I received a notification from my insurance company and it made mention of their “exception” process. Long story made short I worked with my dermatologist and he provided the insurance company with additional info and resubmitted the prescription and it was approved with $100 copay. I have been using it for about 90 days and no improvement noted so far. Your doctor
should be familiar with the exception process as it is my understanding they run into this with many prescriptions. Good luck!
