Water Polo

A MyVitiligoTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here with Vitiligo plays waterpolo. My son was diagnosed in January. And he loves waterpolo he’s played for years. Right when he was diagnosed my first thought was he’s going to have to stop playing. His dermatologist didn’t seem worried and actually talks to him about the sport. But as a parent and spending so much time in the sun I worry and am concerned about his Vitiligo spreading and becoming worse.

My son is a water/pool freak! We saw Dermo 2 weeks ago. She said 10-15 mins a day in the sun is good for my son to get Vit D, which helps with vitiligo. Anything after 15 mins put on SPF 50 sunscreen. One of the treatments for Vitiligo is light Therapy. Of course, it is a different kind of light than the sun but anything to build the Vit D levels! Mt son also wears a full-length neoprene swim shirt or wetsuit. Not sure what the regulations are for water polo, but you can ask for accommodations. Better to support him in his sports endeavors than to add to his self-consciousness by banning him from the sport?

Thank you so much for the reply, I really appreciate it:) That’s what I don’t want to do is ban him from playing the only sport he LOVES and is great at. He already having a hard enough time coping with having Vitiligo and to have to tell him he wouldn’t be able to play water polo would crush him. But I’ll be getting him a neoprene swim shirt.
