Anxhela hello! Pregnancy is known to trigger the onset of vitiligo, but not all women with pre-existing vitiligo experience exacerbation
during pregnancy. Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease
that causes patchy depigmentation of the skin.
It's not widely known if vitiligo affects pregnancy, but some studies have shown that vitiligo may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as: Recurrent miscarriage, Prematurity, Intrauterine growth retardation, and Pre-eclampsia. However, the association between vitiligo and pregnancy outcomes remains unclear. For example, one study found that patients who were treated with oral medications had a lower risk of abortion than those who were not. Limited treatment interventions for vitiligo in pregnancy are available for the time being. They may include topical corticosteroids and phototherapies. Folic acid supplementation is particularly advised for women in conjunction with phototherapy.
